Burj Khalifa is a reflection of the splendor and luxury of Dubai as one of the world's metropolitan cities. This 829.8 m high building is recorded as the tallest building in the world, beating the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan.
The skyscraper owned by Emaar Properties was designed by an architect from the USA, Adrian Smith, from the Skidmore, Owings and Merril Architecture Firm. Construction of the Burj Khalifa began on 6 January 2004, and was completed on 1 October 2009, with Bill Baker as chief structural engineer. Samsung C and T from South Korea, was selected as the main contractor for the construction of the Burj Khalifa.
The construction of the Burj Khalifa took 5 years, at a cost of 1.5 billion US Dollars. The building which was originally to be named Burj Dubai, was officially opened on January 4, 2010.
Burj Khalifa consists of 163 floors, equipped with 57 lifts and 8 escalators. The lift has a capacity of 12 to 14 people, capable of moving up or down at a speed of 10 meters per second. It is the world's fastest double deck lift. Apart from elevators and escalators, this building also has regular stairs, which consist of 2,909 steps, up to the 160th floor.
Burj Khalifa is a multifunctional building. Inside there are 900 private residential apartments, hotels, offices, restaurants, nightclubs, libraries, swimming pools, and shopping centers.
